Frequently Asked Questions
What
is "I Have a Dream"® - Beaumont?
"I Have a Dream"®
– Beaumont (IHAD) is an organization that provides academically
talented/economically disadvantaged “dreamers” the help,
motivation and encouragement to stay in school, graduate, and attend
college or technical school. The program works with “dreamers”
on a long-term basis from 6th grade through high school
and post-secondary education.
What does your organization provide?
We provide ”dreamers” support and opportunities to help them
achieve their educational goals and become successful adults. With
education as a foundation, “dreamers” learn the to avoid
negative influences, such as criminal activity and substance abuse,
thus helping them succeed in life. Specifically, we provide:
Mentoring
(Dream Partners)
Tutoring
Academic
support and preparation
Future
oriented activities
Character
Education and Life Skills
Educational
field trips
Sports activities
Community service projects
How
do you choose the participating Dreamers?
IHAD collaborates with the Beaumont Independent School District and
selects “dreamers” to participate based on their economic need
and academic potential (determined by test scores). Dreamers are
identified as at-risk of dropping out of school and qualify for
free/reduced lunch, indicative of the low-income family status. The
program is not currently accepting new “dreamers.”
How many students are in your program?
IHAD has helped more than 300 students since we began in 1988. Many
of those “dreamers” are now in college, vocational school, the
military, or the workforce. Currently, there are 75 “dreamers”
three high schools in Beaumont.
What is a Mentor?
A mentor (dream partner) is a volunteer who provides one-on-one
support, both academic and social guidance and companionship. This
challenging, yet rewarding, volunteer position requires one hour a
week of time and energy for at least one year.
How can I become a Dream Partner?
It’s easy! If you’re at least 18 years old, simply fill out the
volunteer form and we’ll send you the necessary information, or
contact our office to sign up for an orientation and training
session. Finally, a one-on-one interview is scheduled to begin your
volunteer experience with I Have a Dream.
Are there other volunteer opportunities other than becoming a
Dream Partner?
Yes. There are a number of volunteer opportunities to directly or
indirectly help “dreamers” realize their educational dreams.
